Presumptuous Quote Of The Day: DC Express Edition

Tuesday, June 3rd, 2008

Let me preface this by saying that if you know you want to get pregnant later in life, then by all means, there are just certain things you shouldn’t willingly do, barring medical emergency - like getting a hysterectomy.

But I am sick and tired of all the calls for women to change their lifestyles just in case they decide that one day they’d really appreciate it if the stork came calling; you know, the whole “pre-pregnant” crap. It’s the whole “Oh, hey there! You’re an incubator!” mentality.

So this morning, I was enjoying my daily morning reading on the DC Metro, and happened across this article in the paper titled “Make Womb For Future Kids”. Aside from the fact that the headline doesn’t make much sense, I saw this quote:

You’ve yet to hear a single tick-tock, but lurking beneath your killer abs is a biological clock that will start buzzing eventually…

ORLY? Well, obviously yes, cause I’m a girl. My ultimate goal in life is to make babies. And then to nest. A lot.

Except… it’s not. There are a lot of women who choose not to have children, and that doesn’t make them abnormal or strange by any means. It’s this kind of attitude that makes it easy for us to call childless women “freaks”, “unnatural” or “man haters”. It’s annoyingly presumptuous (hence the title of the post!).

Oh, and so is assuming I have killer abs, cause I uh…don’t.

Presumptuous Quote Of The Day

Ashlee Simpson waxes philosophic on getting married:

I think [changing your name] is something that a woman should do when they’re marrying a man. It’s a tradition that I think is a great tradition.

Aside from using the same word twice in a sentence, which is irritating, she’s also kind of an idiot.

I think you missed a really essential qualifying phrase there, Ashlee - “if that’s what she wants to do.”

The finished sentence looks like this: A woman should change her name if that’s what she wants to do.
