Students Proclaim: Stop Misleading Ads for Crisis Pregnancy Centers |
|
For Immediate Release
April 1, 2008
WASHINGTON, DC - Students across the country have taken to the phones today, to tell their Senators that "they won't be fooled by Crisis Pregnancy Centers any longer" and are asking them to co-sponsor a bill introduced today by Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ). The Stop Deceptive Advertising in Women's Services (SDAWS) bill would restrict Crisis Pregnancy Centers from advertising their services to women around the country using deception, misinformation, "bait and switch" tactics, and manipulation.
Crisis Pregnancy Centers are routinely found near college campuses and universities, where young women and students fall as easy prey to their deceptive and dangerous tactics.
Choice USA Executive Director, Kierra Johnson released this statement:
"Crisis Pregnancy Centers are especially dangerous for young women and students - targeting university newspapers with an abundance of deceptive and misleading advertising - when young women and students have fewer financial resources, fewer options for health care, and relative inexperience in navigating the health care system."
"Heading to a CPC may be the first experience many students and young women have when making decisions about their reproductive health, and to be deceived by people you are led to believe are medical professionals, can damage not only their trust, but their overall heath and well-being," said Johnson.
Johnson continued, "Senator Menendez is taking a bold and necessary step forward for women's health and rights by requiring that ads for health services that target women be held to a standard of truth, not someone's political or religious agenda. The passage of his bill will be a great service to women everywhere."
Choice USA and the National Abortion Federation are asking people around the country to pick up their phones today to ask their Senators to co-sponsor and support the Stop Deceptive Advertising in Women's Services bill. Choice USA student chapters at colleges and universities around the country will be engaging in awareness-building campaigns in their communities to ensure that women can access the full range of health care services available. Students Launch Campaign to Restore Birth Control Costs on Campus |
|
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE March 25, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC - Choice USA has responded to the many calls from students wanting answers to the question, "Why did my birth control get so expensive?"
Through this campaign students will urge university and college administrations to stand with them in pressuring Congress to restore campus birth control prices, prioritize student health, and lessen their financial burden.
The cost of contraceptives for students has risen drastically around the nation in the past year because of a change that came into effect in 2007. Entitled the Deficit Reduction Act, this change has allowed pharmaceutical companies to stop a long-time-held bulk discount to universities, college health clinics and other safety net providers to subsidize the rising cost of birth control for students, young women and low-income women. The Deficit Reduction Act has forced millions of women to make important healthcare decisions based on their budget, not their health needs.
"Just add birth control to the ever growing list of financial concerns on the shoulders of students. Rising tuition, books for classes, health insurance, decent food on campus, and keeping up with technology; it's a wonder that students can focus on their educations." said Choice USA Executive Director, Kierra Johnson.
The Choice USA chapter at the University of Michigan has already demonstrated what a successful campaign can look like; their administration has already signed a letter submitted to legislators, encouraging them to restore the discounts previously given to campus health centers. Other schools like the University of Pittsburgh, Willamette College, Mills College and the University of Alabama will be collecting petitions, educating their peers, and fundraising to help subsidize students who can't afford the price increases. Choice USA is disseminating campaign kits to aid students in organizing on their campuses. For more information, visit www.choiceusa.org.

Supreme Court Undermines Women |
|
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 18, 2007

Washington, DC – The Supreme Court ruled this morning to uphold a ban on an abortion procedure in Gonzales v. Carhart – a decision that all previous courts hearing the cases had ruled unconstitutional and marking the first time in history the highest court has ruled on a specific method used to provide abortions. Despite being dangerously vague and lacking a health exception for women, the ban was upheld in a 5-4 ruling.
Crystal Plati, Executive Director of Choice USA, a youth-led, youth-focused reproductive rights organization, issued the following statement in response to the Supreme Court’s decision:
“Choice USA, and our young leaders, are deeply concerned that the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled against the health and well-being of women, against the guidance and judgement of trained doctors and medical professionals, and against the best interest of the American people.”
“Not only does the ruling undermine the health needs of patients and expertise of their doctors, it rolls back 30 years of legal precedence protecting women’s health from politics.”
“The full weight of this ban will be borne by the generation of young people who will continue to see further attacks from state and federal politicians on their abilities to receive quality care provided by trained doctors. This ban further risks access for young women today and opens the door for more barriers and obstacles in the future.”
Choice USA opposed the abortion ban because of its potentially wide-reaching effects on the health of all women, through restricting a doctor’s ability to decide the best medical care for an individual circumstance. Choice USA will continue to advocate on behalf of the rights, health, and well-being of women and their families.
