I
received some sad news over the weekend. One of our own, Jana Mackey,
an alumni of Choice USA, was taken from this earth in an unspeakable
and brutal way. In 2004, Jana helped organize the Kansas Youth All Access Contingent to the March for Women's Lives with fellow students Johanna Masky, Jeff Allmon, and Kevin Hager.

Another World is Possible Where Young Leaders Call the Shots |

When you think of the upcoming US Social Forum, what things come to mind? Anti-globalization marches? Protestors against big business? Groups looking to infuse workers’ and human rights into international trade agreements? Calls for an end to imperialism? Anti-war activists? Maybe all of the above. However, we doubt, for many of you, reproductive justice issues every come into play.

Campaign to Defeat Proposition 85 |
|
21 Sep 2006
What’s Proposition 85 All About?
Proposition 73, a previous parental notification initiative, was
defeated in 2005 California special election by 52.6 percent of the
population. Eight unpopular propositions were introduced in last year’s
election, and Prop 73 was defeated by the closest margin. The
proposition had the majority vote in 33 of California’s 58 counties,
but thanks to the efforts of a coalition of individual and
organizations the young women of California kept hold their rights to
reproductive health and privacy. This November a very similar parental
notification initiative will be placed on the ballot. Proposition 85
would amend the California constitution to implement a 48 hour waiting
period for minors seeking an abortion. During this time, the physician
is required to notify the minor’s parent/legal guardian. The only
exception to this prohibition would be in cases of a medical emergency
or court order, otherwise known as a judicial bypass. The proposition
will be on the ballot on November 7, 2006.
