The truth about Wisconsin's EC ban

Anti-contraception lawmakers in the Wisconsin legislature are waging war on the reproductive rights of the young women of that state. The State Assembly recently passed a bill that would ban the advertisement and distribution of emergency contraception on all public university campuses, bringing Wisconsin one step further toward becoming the first state to deny emergency contraception to students statewide.

House passes minor transportation ban

The so-called "Child Custody Protection Act" (CCPA, HR476 ) would make it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines in order to help her obtain an abortion in a state that does not require parental involvement. On April 18, the House of Representatives approved the bill 260-161.

 
State gag rule passes PA House

In May 2002, the Pennsylvania House passed an amendment to the 2003 budget that would prohibit family planning clinics from receiving state funds if they discuss abortion or provide referrals to women seeking abortion services. This is in conflict with federal law which requires federally funding family planning clinics to discuss the option of abortion and provide abortion referrals. If passed, this measure will have a severe impact on low-income women who receive free or low-cost family planning care from these clinics.

 
Bush cheers anti-choice activists at rally

Two days after declaring the anniversary of Roe v. Wade "National Sanctity of Life Day," President George W. Bush addressed an anti-choice rally at the Washington Monument. The rally protested the 1973 Supreme Court decision that recognized women's constitutional right to choose abortion. Calling in from West Virginia, Bush praised the protesters, saying, "You're working and marching on behalf of a noble cause and affirming a culture of life." In proclaiming the Roe anniversary "Sanctity of Life Day," Bush declared, "President Jefferson's timeless principle obligates us to pursue a civil society that will democratically embrace its essential moral duties, including defending the elderly, strengthening the weak, protecting the defenseless, feeding the hungry, and caring for children -- born and unborn."
