Where We've Been

Choice USA, founded in 1992, mobilizes and provides ongoing support to the diverse, upcoming generation of leaders who promote and protect reproductive choice both now and in the future.

We are dedicated to the right of each person worldwide to decide when and if they will have sex, when and if they will be pregnant, and when and if they will have a child. The organizations first projects analyzed the activities of the religious right in elections and promoted electoral participation by women, young people, and people of color. In 1996, responding to signs that young people’s support for reproductive choice had declined compared to previous generations and that young supporters of choice were disconnected from the pro-choice movement, Choice USA created the Next Generation Campaign which focused its work exclusively on teenagers and young people.

Research, gathered from polls conducted from 1997-1999, confirmed that teenagers and young adults had come to accept many of the anti-choice movement’s premises and values. Illuminating part of the problem, twice as many survey respondents reported hearing more from the "pro-life" movement than the pro-choice movement.

kierra_marchIn the wake of a deafening resurgence of anti-choice activism targeting young people, it became clear that there was a greater need within the pro-choice movement to increase our focus, action, and training toward developing stronger youth leadership.

National in scope, Choice USA’s programs address the pressing need for pro-choice messages, programs, and strategies tailored to engage today’s young people, whose experiences differ markedly (socially and politically) from the generation of reproductive rights activists who fought to see Roe v. Wade passed in 1973.

In 2001, Choice USA laid the groundwork for making a transition to exclusively become a youth-led and focused reproductive rights organization creating programs that incorporate the lessons learned from our research (and validated by our field experience) to regain young people’s support. Today, our programs reach young people in every region of the country and we have built a strong base of credibility with young activists who praise our leadership development programs, our commitment to mentoring, and our empowering approach to mobilizing and organizing with and around young people.
