Give Abstinence-Only Funding the Boot!

This week, Senator Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) and Representative Barbara Lee (D-CA-9) introduced the Repealing Ineffective and Incomplete Abstinence-Only Program Funding Act. This legislation would end the failed Title V Abstinence-Only Program once and for all. The bill would strike Title V from the Social Security Act, eliminating $50 million a year in funding for dangerous abstinence-only programs. Funding will be transferred to the Personal Responsibility Education Program (PREP) state-grant program. PREP programs are evidence-based, address both abstinence and contraception and include information on adult preparation topics like healthy relationships.

Check out Choice USA's awesome Sex[+] factsheet to find out why Title V funding needs to go.

Choice USA activists have been organizing in support of comprehensive sex education, and now we finally have the chance to end abstinence-only funding! Here’s what you can do:

  1. Send an e-mail to your Representative and Senators and urge them to co-sponsor the legislation.
  2. Find your Representative and Senators on Facebook, ‘like’ them and post this message on their wall: “As a young person, I know that abstinence-only education is failing my generation. Please co-sponsor the Repealing Ineffective and Incomplete Abstinence-Only Program Funding Act and give the failed Title V Abstinence-Only Program the boot.”
  3. Find your Representative and Senators' Twitter handle and tweet “@Representative/ Senator, ab-only education doesn’t work. Please co-sponsor the Repealing Ineffective and Incomplete Abstinence-Only Program Funding Act. #bootabonly”

Together, we can finally give abstinence-only funding the boot.
